Chief Executive Officer, HSE3
Ben has more than 20 years of human factors experience, the majority focused on enhancing operational and business excellence.
He has specialist experience working with high performance civil and military teams, including race car drivers, fighter combat instructors, submariners, principal warfare officers and clearance divers. Based on this experience, he knows the practical and pragmatic human factors and human performance programs that enable personnel, within both their professional and personal lives, to build and enhance habit patterns for high performance.
The successful outcomes of his work are empowered individuals and teams capable of delivering innovative projects to achieve behavioural and cultural change and to ultimately create high reliability organisations.
A leader in risk and human factors strategies, Ben supported the development of international safety standards now used in global aviation, including Fatigue Risk Management Systems (FRMS) Standards. He is one of Australia’s most senior human factors specialists in the field of applied human performance within error intolerant, tightly coupled workplaces. Ben has delivered real improvements to help elite military teams, as well as personnel within industrial and other transport industries, to do the best they can with what they’ve got – with the goal to improve their performance.
Ben stays aligned with contemporary best practice via access to a diverse range of human performance industry leaders, including a partnership with US-based Dr Tony Kern, Matt Hall Racing (Australian Red Bull Air Race Team), FRMS and Human Performance Investigation Specialists, and elite military units. He is a regular human performance contributor to Australian Aviation magazine.
Dr Carmel Harrington

Carmel is an internationally recognised sleep expert and author of The Sleep Diet and The Complete Guide to a Good Night’s Sleep. Carmel has been working in sleep research for over 20 years and remains one of Australia’s most senior sleep specialists. An Honorary Research Fellow at the Children’s Hospital Westmead, Carmel is a highly sought-after consultant on sleep health strategies worldwide. Her practical interventions have allowed individuals to enhance the quality of their sleep, achieve career goals, and improve their lives.
Dr Malcolm Brenner
Human Performance and Investigation Specialist, Partner with HSE3
Malcolm has over 25 years’ experience as an applied accident investigator across aviation, road, maritime and rail. A human performance specialist, Malcolm was former Chief of the Aviation Human Performance Division for the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). He was instrumental in supporting the development and delivery of the NTSB Investigating Fatigue training course and numerous human performance studies and reports.
With a PhD in applied psychology (human performance) and an innate understanding of the use of accident investigation data and trends, Malcolm continues to utilise his experience to conduct independent risk-based reviews of transport systems with a focus on human performance, including fatigue.
Mr Mick Aspinall

Mick Aspinall is a human factor specialist and recognised industry leader. After 13 years as a C130 Combat Airlift Pilot in the RAAF, and now a 747 pilot for a major international airline, he has been exposed to environments where the highest performance is a fundamental requirement for mission success. Mick takes the techniques, tactics and procedures that have been proven time and again in the demanding environments of high performance aviation operations and translates them in a unique and engaging way to generate high performance outcomes for other industries. Mick’s passion is seeing people realise their own full potential through the power of coaching and mentoring.
Dr Melissa Mallis
President and Chief Scientist, M3 Alertness Management, Partner organisation to HSE3
Melissa is an international leader in Fatigue Risk Management Systems (FRMS) and alertness research. She has provided FRMS scientific expertise to Delta Airlines, the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Department of Defense, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Civil Aerospace Medical Institute, Transport Canada, and the International Air Transport Association. Melissa is a member of several scientific review and advisory committees, and a peer reviewer for the leading journals in the sleep science field. She has conducted research examining different in-flight fatigue countermeasures, drowsiness detection technologies, and challenges associated with ultra-long range flights.
Melissa provides expert guidance, dictated by scientific principles, to develop internally implemented fatigue risk management policies in compliance with regulatory requirements. She is widely published and a popular speaker with both industry and government audiences.
Mr Craig Marcombe

Craig started his career as a helicopter pilot in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), before moving into organisational development more than 20 years ago. A highly experienced facilitator, Craig applies skills in cultural change, leadership, team building, innovation, safety, and organisational performance. Craig has worked in public and private sector businesses in Australia, South East Asia and the South Pacific, bringing a wealth of local and international corporate experience to the HSE3 team. An accredited Executive Coach with the Institute of Executive Coaching and Leadership (IECL), Craig’s specialist skills are suited for clients directly seeking to drive organisational performance.
Mrs Christie O’Higgins

Christie has over 20 years’ experience in marketing, advertising, communications and media. She has extensive experience in executive coaching and mentoring, senior level recruitment and executive management. She has worked across Australia and in the Middle East. Christie has run global advertising agencies and projects and consulted with some of the world’s most recognised brands and executive teams. She has a Masters degree and a passion for helping people get the best out of themselves, their brands, their team and their career. She is currently helping find and place senior executives in roles across the Middle East whilst continuing her Executive Coaching practice.

Tim is an international authority and leading expert on the application of competency-based training and applied non-technical skills (NTS). Co-author of Competency-Based Education in Aviation: Exploring Alternate Training Pathways, Tim’s 18-plus years as an airline pilot and training Captain combined with his applied research has seen high demand for his expertise, including consultation with almost every major airline in Australia and New Zealand. His work has also been adopted by military organisations to positively shape the next generation of human factors and NTS training programs for elite military teams.
